Saying Yes to Buffalo

Rebecca Bass
Director of Strategic Program Development and Grants, Say Yes Buffalo

Rebecca Bass spent years away from Buffalo across major metro areas like Philadelphia, Atlanta, New York City, and a stint in Burlington, Vermont. And while she enjoyed unique things about each of those places and periods in her life, something since coming back to Buffalo feels different.

“In Buffalo, we are more of a community than any of the places I’ve lived before,” Rebecca said.

A big part of the fulfilment comes from her career. Rebecca is the Director of Strategic Program Development and Grants with Say Yes Buffalo, an organization removing barriers to educational attainment, workforce participation, and economic mobility for Buffalo’s public school students. Say Yes provides a last-dollar tuition scholarship for graduates of the Buffalo Public Schools or public charter schools to attend 2-year or 4-year college programs, or to complete professional certificates. Say Yes also offers comprehensive wraparound services and enrichment programming for children in grades Pre-K through 16 to support their holistic well-being and school readiness.

“I am deeply committed to my work,” Rebecca said. “I have never been in a place with such a healthy, warm working culture.”

Beyond work, Rebecca has recently further planted roots even deeper in Buffalo, purchasing a home in North Buffalo.

“I always tell my friends that Buffalo is a Goldilocks Zone—not too, big, not too small, but just right.”

What do you like to do for fun?

I joined Terra Clay pottery studio in Kenmore—I love making things and love the community of people there. Beyond that I like seeing different art installations at Buffalo Arts Studio, Burchfield Penny and AKG Art Gallery, and finding nearby hiking trails like 18 Mile Creek, Reinstein Woods, Stiglmeier Park, Chestnut Ridge, and Tift Nature Preserve. We also have an incredible food scene in Buffalo, so there are always great and new places to try.

Buffalo has so many things to do and see, but it is not overwhelming.

What are some of your favorite food spots?

A new favorite takeout spot is Afghan House on Jefferson. Butterblock has the best pastries anywhere. Other favorites are Southern Junction on Connecticut St., Jay’s Artisan Pizza on Delaware in Kenmore, Mother’s in Allentown, Coco on Main St. downtown, Daniela on Forest Ave., Hydraulic Hearth in Larkinville, and Lloyd in North Buffalo.
